Children are not automatically born with the rules and expectations of life. These are understood initially when they are taught to be good little children. Expect that they will come with pouting, crying, tantrums and also make a lot of mistakes. One essential part of their learning method is the way adults respond. One important thing that parents and caregivers will learn from this book is that there is a difference between discipline and punishment and it is important that this is acknowledged and dealt with accordingly. For punishment, the child is taught that people in authority set rules for subordinates to follow and if not, there will be consequences. Basically, they learn what they should NOT do, not what they should do. On the other hand, good discipline aims to teach. In this case, children are taught social behavior that is acceptable and also learn self-control. Children are encouraged to repeat good behavior when it is praised by adults and this method is also used to correct an unacceptable behavior. A chance to execute discipline is to model ideal problem solving skills as well as respect and patience. With time, children learn how to do what is right and acceptable without being told.About the Author: Neila Wilson grew up in a home with parents who had authoritative tendencies and she learnt from early childhood that rules are made by those who have power and there are negative consequences if she or any of her siblings (subordinates) dared to break them. She could describe herself as a person who displays good behavior as a result of her parents, but then she started having children of her own. She learnt without a shadow of a doubt that there is more to life than simply carrying out punishment. Realizing that she did not have the knowledge to adequately raise her children to behave appropriately, she sought the help of professionals in this field. Neila became aware of a lot of relevant information regarding the best ways of teaching the child what behaviors are accepted and those that are not. Importantly, she followed the guidelines that she received to make sure that her method of parenting (punishment) did not result in deviant tendencies, hatred and anger and that the child does not become a burden to the society at a later date. She writes this book to help individuals who are not aware that they are going about administering discipline in the wrong way, and for those who plan to have children and want to know beforehand what to expect and do when that time comes.
